Quick answer. The DGI certificate-verification service is designed to check the authenticity of a tax certificate that has already been issued. It is not the service used to request a new certificate. If you need a certificate, use the appropriate DGI/SIMPL e-service when that certificate is available online.
Verification and issuance are different operations
| Situation | Correct route |
|---|---|
| You received an electronic tax certificate and want to verify it | DGI certificate verification |
| You are a taxpayer who needs a certificate offered online | The relevant DGI/SIMPL service according to your profile and certificate type |
| You need to manage personal income-tax services | SIMPL-IR for individuals |
Why does this verification exist?
The DGI has progressively moved many tax certificates online. The Ministry of Economy and Finance has documented electronic certificates including tax residence, non-taxation and documents linked to certain VAT exemptions. When a certificate is issued electronically, the verification service allows the recipient to check the official references instead of trusting only a PDF or printed copy received from another person.
Before checking a certificate
- use the references printed on the certificate itself;
- open the official
attestation.tax.gov.madomain directly; - do not upload a tax document to an unknown third-party website simply to “verify” it;
- if the check fails, first confirm that each reference was entered correctly before concluding that the certificate is invalid.
What a failed check does not prove
A verification error alone does not settle a tax dispute, cancel a taxpayer’s situation or prove fraud. For issuance of a certificate, a complaint, a discrepancy in the taxpayer file or an explanation about a tax obligation, use the official services of the General Tax Directorate.

Key point: if no certificate has yet been issued, this is not the correct starting point; verification comes after issuance.
